Limpopo is SA's rising independent powerhouse

The number of private electricity generation projects in Limpopo is growing rapidly, making the province second only to the Northern Cape in capacity registered with Nersa, South Africa’s energy regulator. Two major solar projects added in January brought Limpopo’s total to 1 887 MW, overtaking the Free State.

Three large solar projects were registered in Limpopo in 2024, including a 475 MW facility. It is one of the two largest private solar projects on Nersa’s list, with the other located in the Free State.

The Western Cape registered three large wind projects last year, including the 380 MW FE Overberg wind farm. No new wind registrations have been added since August.

Large private projects (100 MW or more) began registering with Nersa in 2022 after licensing regulations were relaxed. These projects are independent of the government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. Registration does not mean they are operational.

Two-thirds of the 11 324 MW registered by Nersa since 2018 is solar.
